Band and Choir,
I want to say "Thank You" for such a wonderful evening.
Band - You played so musically this evening and you really paid attention to the dynamics, especially when the choir was with us. The American Flourish opener came off well and was super proud of how well the "Minor 49er" turned out. I could even hear little giggles from the audience behind me on the podium. All of the marches were clean and I really liked how you handled the big pieces.
Choir - Thank you so much for your attention to detail and your musicianship tonight. With the first big push into America the Beautiful, I knew we were in for a real treat. I felt "I Hear America Singing" went well and it was really special to have the words to the Armed Forces Salute for our audience this evening. Battle Hymn was truly outstanding and I really appreciate you following me during the rubato section. The build all the way to the end was just fantastic and it was hard to keep from getting a bit choked up. Having you join us is always a treat for the band, but it was super special for me this year.
All - With having Joe on his sabbatical, it means more conducting time for me and it was a true joy to stand in front of all of you this evening. I think James did a wonderful job with the announcing and he was able to bring some personal history and interactions to his message tonight. I really think the time he afforded before and after Armed Force Salute was very well received. I need to put a big thank you out there to Chris Gebhardt for the balance he was able to give the band and the choir to allow all parts to be heard. He continues to dial in settings that just gives the audience a better representation of what you are providing from an open air venue in the middle of a park. I had a great number of audience members come up following the concert to say "Thank You" and how much of a wonderful evening it was. I heard from another director of a local arts group that they were most impressed and how proud the concert made them feel about being an American, but also being from Plano. I even had a couple that approached me to let me know they have been coming out to the summer concerts for years, but they felt this was one of the best concerts that we have ever performed. That is high praise to all of you for your hard work, dedication and musicianship.
I also need to say a huge thank you for all of you that helped before and after the concert with setting up / tearing down and especially getting everything up to the parking lot to get it all loaded in the trailer. David Adkins, this would not have worked without you and extra kudos for the round trip to the church and your help (and Chris) with the risers. The concert was the perfect length so that everyone had solid chops and that everyone could make it cleanly through to the end. We even got packed up and fully unloaded before the rain came in. When my band world and church world collide, and I get to be in the middle of it like I was tonight, I feel like the luckiest guy in Plano.
Thank you for an incredible evening! Happy Forth of July. Be safe, enjoy the day and enjoy each other!
Band - I will see you Monday night at rehearsal. Choir - I will see you Sunday morning at worship.
Musically,
Jim Carter
